Assessment Overview

The Tinnitus Care Provider assessment is a proprietary examination that is owned and copyrighted by the International Hearing Society. The examination was developed by professionals in the field of hearing instrument sciences. These individuals volunteered their time and expertise to this project under the guidance of a test development and psychometric services company. A validity-centered approach was taken to exam development, utilizing accepted best practices within the professional testing community. Specifically, the process included: program design and development of a validation framework; blueprint development; item writing and review; pilot/beta form assembly; initial item analysis and selection; operational form assembly; and standard setting. On an ongoing basis, examination maintenance is performed that includes test item analysis and pilot testing implementation and maintenance. The exam validity is measured at least annually using statistical psychometric analysis of the exam data from program participants. The 105-question assessment is intended to measure the learner’s attainment of the course learning objectives. Assessment takers are required to achieve the passing score in order to earn the Tinnitus Care Provider Certificate; all questions are scored dichotomously, that is, they are scored as being either correct or incorrect.

The computer-based assessment is offered via remote proctoring through the IHS e-Learning Portal. The assessment fee ($300.00 USD) is paid separately from the course so learners can decide if they want to pursue the assessment. Learners are allowed two attempts to pass the assessment, and the fee applies per attempt. The first attempt must be completed with 6 months (180 days) from the start date of the course. More information about the structure and content of the assessment may be found in the Assessment Guide.
