In the hearing healthcare industry, both “CE Credit” and “CEU” are used to describe the calculation of continuing education hours. The terms are often used interchangeably, but there is an important distinction between the two. IHS awards and tracks CE Credits, which are the standard education units for Hearing Aid Specialists.  A CEU is the standard education unit for Audiologists.

  • CE Credit – 1 credit equals one hour of education, e.g. a 3-hour class awards 3 CE Credits.
  • Continuing Education Unit (CEU) – 1 unit equals ten hours of education, e.g. a 3-hour class awards 0.3 CEUs.

Whether you are an IHS Member or not, you likely have CE Credits on your IHS record. You can obtain these records from your IHS Account free of charge at any time. The instructions for this are found below. With questions, contact our Professional Development team.

Reporting to Other Organizations

IHS routinely receives questions about reporting Continuing Education to other organizations such as NBC-HIS, CE Broker, and more.

NBC-HIS

All CE Credits that are on your IHS record are automatically reported to the National Board for Certification in Hearing Instrument Sciences.

CE Broker

The only credits IHS reports to CE Broker are those that attendees earn at the IHS Conference & Expo. All other courses you will need to report to CE Broker yourself.

AAA

The only credits IHS reports to the American Academy of Audiology (AAA) are those that attendees earn at the IHS Conference & Expo. All other courses you will need to report to AAA yourself.

States / Jurisdictions

IHS generally does not report course completion or CE credits to individual states/jurisdictions. If you have questions about reporting CE credits to a particular licensing agency, please contact our Professional Development team.

  • Is there a difference between “Credits” and “Units” in measuring Continuing Education?

Yes, while they are both used to describe the calculation of continuing education hours, there is a very important distinction between the two. A Continuing Education Credit (CE Credit) equals one hour of education and is the standard unit for Hearing Aid Specialists. As an example, a 3-hour course offering CE Credits would award 3 CE Credits. A Continuing Education Unit (CEU) equals ten hours of education, so if a 3-hour course offered CEUs, then it would award 0.3 CEUs, and is the standard unit for Audiologists.
