The International Licensing Examination for Hearing Healthcare Professionals (ILE) is the multiple-choice licensing examination owned and operated by the International Hearing Society (IHS). It is used as the written licensing exam for Hearing Aid Specialists in a majority of the United States and Canada.

Check with the licensing agency of your state/province to verify their process.

Testing Accommodations for the ILE

IHS follows all applicable laws for exam accommodations for candidates with disabilities. Under the law, IHS is not required to provide accommodations that would fundamentally alter what the examination is intended to test, jeopardize examination security, and/or result in an undue burden. There are no fees to those who request or receive accommodations.

To receive accommodations for the ILE, you must complete the Candidate Accommodations Request Form and wait for a decision from IHS before scheduling your exam appointment.

Accommodations Process

  1. You submit the completed request form and provide supporting documentation to exam@ihsinfo.org. The request form should be submitted at least 90 days before your desired test date.
  2. IHS will review your request, which could take up to 60 days but is often completed sooner. Submitting an incomplete request form and/or incomplete or insufficient supporting documentation will delay the review process. IHS will reach out to you via email if additional information is needed.
  3. IHS will notify you if your accommodation(s) have been approved or denied.
  4. If approved, IHS will then assist you with scheduling the exam with the approved accommodations. Exam appointments with accommodations will be scheduled at least 30 days out. You cannot self-register to receive the approved accommodations. Exam appointments with approved accommodations must be scheduled by IHS staff.
  5. You will receive your approved accommodation(s) at the testing center the day of your exam.

Re-taking the Exam with Previously-Approved Accommodations

If you need to re-take the ILE with previously-approved accommodations, you are not required to submit a new request form. You will need to call IHS at 734-522-7200 or email exam@ihsinfo.org to initiate the scheduling process. You cannot self-schedule the exam re-take if you want to retain the previously-approved accommodations. Exam appointments with accommodations must be scheduled through IHS staff to receive accommodations.

Requesting New or Additional Accommodations

If you need new, different, or additional accommodations, you must submit a new Request Form and supporting documentation. This new request will undergo the same review process as the initial request.
